To my relief, the remainder of the voyage passed relatively smoothly. I stayed in the cabin, receiving meals via Lisette or Erik, as Dylan spread a range of scrolls out across the floor, referring to them as he spoke. I was grateful that Dylan seemed mainly to be in a good mood, although at times he seemed frustrated that I did not immediately know the answers to questions as soon as he asked them. He had even consented to teaching me some more of the runic symbols of the Ancient Tongue, and lent me a small notebook with his notes on the runes and their meanings for me to practise further.

Sometimes Erik would join us, listening with interest to aspects of Dark Elf history and lore, such as the Two Hundred Year War which had almost decimated the Dark Elf race. His eyes had brightened and he had leaned closer, drinking in the tale and asking a range of questions from the types of weapons used and the number of daily casualties, to the tactics that the leaders of the Erthor faction used against the followers of Sybilla. Eventually though, Dylan had lost his patience when the interruptions became too regular, and Erik was told that he could either sit and listen or leave. Erik, sticking his nose in the air rather pugnaciously, declared that he hadn’t been that interested anyway- which we had all known was an outright lie- and stormed off to the deck where he apparently helped Markus at the helm. I had bitten my tongue when I found that out, determined not to say anything that might spoil his enjoyment. He had sensed my discomfort though, I was sure.

When he wasn’t quizzing Dylan about the Two Hundred Year War, he was asking me why Markus and I were not speaking, or even interacting with each other. I got the feeling that Markus, like me, was avoiding answering these sorts of questions, but I didn’t want to be the one to explain to Erik why we weren’t talking. Let Markus be the one to admit that he was bitter at not being told about my identity, that he didn’t approve of my magic or the changes I had undergone while living with my grandfather. Perhaps he might articulate it better for Erik than he had with me, but I doubted it.

‘Nina?’ Dylan’s voice interrupted my thoughts and I was brought back to the present, where I noticed that he had begun to pack up the scrolls.

‘What is it?’ I asked, wondering what I had missed.

‘We’ve been summoned to the deck,’ he said, tying one of the tightly wound scrolls with some twine. ‘I think we might nearly be at the Karoni Lagoon.’

I felt excitement spread through me, after being aboard this vessel for several days I was all too ready to leave. I wanted to get ashore, feel the fresh air again and stretch my legs properly. Most of all I wanted to leave Markus, and the tension that seemed to fill the boat, behind.
